CEO in Chief: What a Donald Trump Presidency Would Look Like

Donald Trump announces his candidacy for president during a rally at his Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York, on Tuesday June 16, 2015. Mr. Trump also announced the release of a financial statement that he says denotes a personal net worth of over 8 billion dollars.

Donald Trump has been called a lot of things, including “the Donald”, but the one title that has eluded him, so far, is “Mr. President”. However, that day may be approaching more quickly than anyone realizes.

The American billionaire, business magnate, investor, television personality, and author, has never failed to create interest and draw tremendous crowds; and love him or hate him– you know who he is. But Donald Trump is not just a personality, he’s a business genius. Beyond his outrageous quotes, controversial stances, and hair that could have it’s own blog, there’s the possibility of something very fascinating: A CEO in Chief.

If I’m elected president, we will make America great again.
— Donald Trump
But before you scoff at the idea of the “Apprentice” TV star becoming president, take a look at the polls. Among other GOP presidential hopefuls, Trump has not only secured an early lead, but has continued to hold that lead. In fact, a ABC News/Washington Post poll, released July 20, showed Trump leading with 24%, thus holding a double-digit lead over the next-highest candidate, Scott Walker with 13%, and establishing the single largest lead in a presidential poll for the Republican field to this day.

With the possibility of a Trump presidency growing, the first question that comes to mind is: What kind of a president would Donald Trump be?

Further, what would the world look like if America was suddenly under the leadership of one of the most successful business men of our time? How would his policies be influenced by his wealth of business knowledge?

I have made the tough decisions, always with an eye toward the bottom line. Perhaps it’s time America was run like a business.

We’ve listened to the sound-bytes and read between the lines to come up with 3 ways a Donald Trump Presidency would change America:

#1) Job and Wealth Creation through a 5-Point Tax Plan

People are smart, they know you can’t be ‘for’ jobs and against those who create them.
— Donald Trump
Trump advocates a five-tier tax plan which, he says, will help greatly to reduce the national debt, create a friendlier business climate, and generate opportunity and jobs for American workers. Specifically, Trump plans to repeal the death tax, that he sees as a jobs killer, lower the tax rate on capital gains and dividends, end corporate taxes, lower individual rates, and consider a one-time tax on the wealthy to pay down the debt.

Further, Trump would apply a 20 percent import tariff and a 15 percent tax on companies who outsource jobs overseas, asserting that stronger trade negotiations with nations like China would contribute to a more level playing field.

For those companies who made the mistake of sending their businesses overseas but have seen the light and are ready to come home and bring jobs with them, they pay zero tax.
— Donald Trump

Trump believes that a fairer, more straight-forward tax structure can also help average Americans keep more of what they earn. Under Trump’s five-tier tax plan, Americans earning up to $30,000 would pay 1 percent, those earning between $30,000 and $100,000 would pay 5 percent, those earning between $100,000 to $1 million would pay 10 percent, and, finally, the wealthy, who earn $1 million or above would pay a flat 15 percent.
#2) Repeal and Replace The Affordable Care Act.

ObamaCare is a catastrophe that must be repealed and replaced.
— Donald Trump

Being a Republican and a businessman, it’s no surprise that Trump is not a fan of the controversial Affordable Care Act (commonly referred to as ObamaCare). What is surprising, is that, despite calling the Affordable Care Act a “disaster,” Trump still advocates “healthcare for everybody.” In this way, Trump is actually much more liberal than even some actual liberals. Instead of the current healthcare system, Trump favors replacing the Affordable Care Act with a free market plan and utilizing competition to lower costs, noting that, “one way to infuse more competition into the market is to let citizens purchase health-care plans across state lines.” So why haven’t we done this already? One word: Congress. The U.S. Constitution gives Congress control over interstate commerce, but they have never exercised this power regarding health insurance. Trump says, “They need to.”

Trump also supports funding Social Security instead of cutting it, and he plans to pay for it by restoring a stronger U.S. economy. The idea behind this strategy, of coming up with creative ways to produce more value rather than cut expenses, is an idea many great entrepreneurs and businessmen share.

If you can’t take care of your sick in the country, forget it, it’s all over. I mean, it’s no good.
— Donald Trump

#3) Limit New Immigration and Crack-Down on Illegal Immigrants.

We need strong borders; we need a wall.
— Donald Trump

Ok, you’ve probably been waiting for this one– the buzzing topic: immigration. Trump has been put through the ringer recently for remarks he made about the quality of immigrants entering America illegally. But I’m interested to find out what kind of policies he has in mind.

At CPAC, in 2013, Trump said Republicans should block any path to citizenship or voting status for undocumented immigrants, stating that citizenship for illegal immigrants is a GOP “suicide mission.” Citing a 2011 GAO study that found America’s prisons house 351,000 criminals who committed crimes after illegally entering America, he stated that “The GAO says that the annual price tag to incarcerate these thugs is $1.1 billion. And get this: criminal aliens have an average of seven arrests.” Trump says criminal illegal aliens must go.

But he’s not looking to stop immigration, in fact, Trump believes that legal immigration from Europe should be expanded and also favors giving a legal status to foreign students who complete a degree at an American university.

In addition to to these reforms for America’s legal immigration system, Trump says that the President must start enforcing existing immigration laws and complete the fence at the southern border.

Properly built walls work. We just need the political will to finish the job.
— Donald Trump

You may not agree with his policies, and you may find his confidence unappealing, but the one thing you can’t fault him for is his candor. In fact, it’s one of the qualities that’s helped him stand out so starkly against a backdrop of seasoned politicians, who’ve made a living out of avoiding the issues– instead of leading. The truth is that, Trump, controversial as he is, has hit on something that’s been lost in American politics for a long time– a raw, uncensored, off-the-cuff honesty. When you hear Trump speak, there’s one thing you can be certain of– he hasn’t held anything back. It’s the quality that fans find endearing and his competition finds hard to compete with– it’s quintessentially Trump.

He has serious plans, a straightforward approach, obvious passion, and massive star power– but can he win the nomination? I don’t know. Should he? That’s for America to decide. But I wouldn’t write him off, if for nothing else than the fact that Trump is not a man to lose and he genuinely wants this Presidency. To put it simply, anyone eager to dismiss the seriousness of his presidency, or stand in his way, do so at their own peril.
