12 Crazy Facts About Adele’s Rise to the Top

Adele is a mystery. While we adore her for her talent, her charisma, and unassuming attitude, I can’t help but think that there’s a lot we’re missing. That’s why, when I heard Adele announce her first tour in five years, promoting her new album ‘25’, it was the perfect opportunity to dig a little deeper and learn more about who the real Adele is.

Enjoy these 12 crazy facts about superstar Adele:

1. She prefers to remain an enigma.

While Adele seems to enjoy the limelight and revel in her fame, she prefers to keep much of her life private. Adele has said, “I don’t want to be in everyone’s face. I’m a big music fan and I get really pissed off when it gets like that, and I don’t want people to get like that with me.”

2. She still has stage fright.

Adele is so concerned to never let her fans down that it causes her to have stage fright. In fact, she claims, it’s “getting worse.” “I get so nervous with live performances that I’m too frightened to try anything new,” she said. “It’s actually getting worse. Or it’s just not getting better, so I feel like it’s getting worse, because it should’ve gotten better by now.” As big of a star as Adele is, it’s hard to believe she still gets butterflies before she goes on stage.

3. She’s a smoker.

Perhaps the most shocking of our list, is the fact that Adele is a smoker.  While it’s surprising to think that a voice like hers could maintain it’s integrity through smoking, there are some who credit Adele’s unique and heavily raspy voice to the fact that she is a smoker. In 2012, Adele even had microsurgery to remove a benign polyp from her vocal cords! Nothing can stop this girl from pursuing her passion of singing.

4. She’s worth 76.8 million.

Talk about putting your money where your mouth is! Adele’s wealth is staggering– and well deserved. Having started her professional singing career in her teens, it has been a long journey to the success she now enjoys. Her hard work, talent, and perseverance have earned her a title as one of the highest paid musicians in the world today– hits such as “Rolling in the Deep” and “Set Fire to the Rain” didn’t hurt either.

5. She has MySpace to thank.

Just like Justin Bieber got his start on YouTube, Adele was first discovered on MySpace. After recording a demo for a class project, her friend decided, on a whim, to share it on MySpace. Surprise– people loved it! The success gained from her MySpace demo led to a call from XL Recordings, which lead to a contract.

Bonus: Adele had never heard of  indie record label “XL Recordings” and thought it was a scam, at first. She brought a friend with her to her first meeting the the label, and must have been thrilled to learn that her dreams were about to become a reality.

6. She’s reached “Diamond” status.

Her second album “21”, which explores themes such as heartbreak, self-examination, and forgiveness, has held the top position longer than any album since 1985, and is certified “Diamond” by the RIAA. If that’s not enough, “21” won the 2012 Grammy Award for Album of the Year and the Brit Award for British Album of the Year.

7. She’s made history.

21” is the longest running, number one album, by a female solo artist, in the history of the UK and US Album Charts. Additionally, “21” has earned the distinction of top Billboard 200 album of all time. Talk about making history!

8. She was raised by her mother.

Her mother gave birth to Adele at only 18 years old and quickly became a single mom when Adele’s father left just 2 short years later. Her mother’s strength and courage undoubtedly influenced Adele, who grew close to her mom, as her mother encouraged her young daughter “to explore, and not to stick with one thing.”

9. She started young.

Adele began singing at age four and asserts that she quickly became obsessed with voices. She simply fell in love with the art of singing!

10. She’s not a book-lover.

Growing up, Adele spent most of her time singing instead of reading. The last book she read was Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” when she was six years old!

11. Spice Girls

Adele has cited the Spice Girls as a major influence regarding her love and passion for singing. In fact, Adele impersonated the Spice Girls at dinner parties as a young girl. Adele says that, “they (the Spice Girls) made me what I am today.”

12. Got her driver’s license at age 25

The one thing Adele’s never had – a driver’s license; until Oct. 11 2013 that is.  Adele shared her exciting news to her Twitter fans, saying: “I passed my driving test this morning!!!” But that tweet left more people wondering why she waited until twenty five.  Adele has never taken a test due to her busy schedule over the past few years, and basically just got used to being carted around in limos because, well, she’s Adele.

Adele is not just a world-class vocalist, or some typical celebrity– and her journey has been anything but an overnight success. If there’s one thing that these 12 surprising facts prove, it’s that no matter the quality of one’s talent it must be accompanied by even greater perseverance. Remember, everyone has challenges, some more difficult than others, but with every challenge comes the opportunity for greatness. Find your purpose and do whatever it takes to reach your maximum potential. Who knows, you may even make it to the Grammy’s!
