15 Genius Quotes by Gary Vaynerchuk

Gary Vaynerchuk, or “Gary Vee” as many know him, is an entrepreneur, investor, author, public speaker, and internet personality– who’s earned an unbelievable level of success and notoriety. Vaynerchuk started out as many young people do, by taking on the family business– but he didn’t just take it on, he overhauled it. Fresh out of College, Vaynerchuk transformed his father’s New Jersey liquor store into a retail wine store named Wine Library, but things really started taking off when, in 2006, he started the video blog Wine Library TV, a daily internet webcast on the subject of wine. When I say “things really started taking off”, I mean skyrocketed— through a combination of ecommerce, email marketing, and aggressive pricing, Vaynerchuk grew the business from $3 million to $50 million a year by 2005.

So, he’s basically a business ninja, is what I’m saying.

With the success of Wine Library and Wine Library TV under his belt, Vaynerchuk ventured into social media brand consulting. His company, VaynerMedia, which he co-founded in the Spring of 2009, is his main priority today. Vaynerchuk has said of social media: “When I hear people debate the ROI of social media? It makes me remember why so many business fail. Most businesses are not playing the marathon. They’re playing the sprint. They’re not worried about lifetime value and retention. They’re worried about short-term goals.” But this is just a taste of Vaynerchuk’s genius. Check out the 15 quotes below for some serious wisdom.

  1. “People are chasing cash, not happiness. When you chase money, you’re going to lose. You’re just going to. Even if you get the money, you’re not going to be happy.” — Gary Vaynerchuk

  2. “It’s insane to me to ask anybody to be what they’re not. Know what you know the best, love the most. That’s always going to be the answer to the thing that you have the best shot at winning at.” — Gary Vaynerchuk

  3. “I want to sit with 80- and 90-year-old people more than anyone. They have played this game before. Not one of them has told me, ‘I wish I had more money.'” — Gary Vaynerchuk

  4. “The reason we love our parents is because they loved us first. Every single company should take this advice.” — Gary Vaynerchuk

  5. “I attract a crowd, not because I’m an extrovert or I’m over the top or I’m oozing with charisma. It’s because I care.” — Gary Vaynerchuk

  6. “I’m pretty good at sticking to what I know. You don’t see me social commentating on health-care or presidential debates. I talk about what I know because I’m petrified of being wrong.” — Gary Vaynerchuk

  7. “You have to understand your own personal DNA. Don’t do things because I do them or Steve Jobs or Mark Cuban tried it. You need to know your personal brand and stay true to it.” — Gary Vaynerchuk

  8. “I really chess-play culture shifts. I’m really good at understanding what worldwide cell-phone use means. That’s what I do. I try to picture it three to four to five steps ahead.” — Gary Vaynerchuk

  9. “I failed all my classes and that’s why I’m winning. In hindsight, the fact that I was considered a failure for the first 18 years of my life has become the foundation of my success.” ― Gary Vaynerchuk

  10. “There no longer has to be a difference between who you are and what you do.” ― Gary Vaynerchuk, Crush It!: Why Now Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion

  11. “Developing your personal brand is the same thing as living and breathing your résumé” ― Gary Vaynerchuk, CRUSH IT!

  12. “Live your passion. What does that mean, anyway? It means that when you get up for work every morning, every single morning, you are pumped because you get to talk about or work with or do the thing that interests you the most in the world. You don’t live for vacations because you don’t need a break from what you’re doing—working, playing, and relaxing are one and the same. You don’t even pay attention to how many hours you’re working because to you, it’s not really work. You’re making money, but you’d do whatever it is you’re doing for free.” ― Gary Vaynerchuk, Crush It!: Why Now Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion

  13. “People are usually astonished when a brand puts in extra effort to make them happy. That’s how rarely it happens, and that’s where you, whether you’re an entrepreneur or a big business, can separate yourself from the rest of the pack. Bigger businesses will be able to jump in on more conversations than others, but volume alone won’t raise a brand’s engagement levels—the quality of the conversation will.” ― Gary Vaynerchuk, Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy World

  14. “Any company that gets so complacent it thinks everything is “fine” deserves to go out of business—it literally means its leaders have stopped caring. A competitive company is always on the offense. Always. Always. Always.” ― Gary Vaynerchuk, The Thank You Economy

  15. “If you’re not passionate enough about what your company does to find fuel for conversation every day, for hours on end, with as many people as possible, maybe you’re in the wrong business. Go general if you have to. Not everyone can be the Lakers, but anyone can talk basketball. When I started out, I didn’t have the name recognition of Robert Parker, or the clout of Wine Spectator, so I didn’t talk about Gary Vaynerchuk or Wine Library—I talked about Chardonnay. Social media gives you the opportunity to take your business to its fullest potential. Grab it.” ― Gary Vaynerchuk, The Thank You Economy

We all have our own path, but there is something to be said for standing on the shoulders of the greats. One of those greats is certainly Gary Vaynerchuk, but only if he speaks to you. Take a high achiever that resonates with you and make them your mentor. Study their work, and immerse yourself in their wisdom. Learn from their mistakes and let your new-found knowledge propel you into massive success.
